ARTIST NOTES: I had the original idea for this piece over a year ago. I had the image of the shark and a female figure reaching out to it, stuck in my head for months. Along with the image was the phrase "Take me with you, Spirit of the Sea, Show me some of the things you see."The person is a reflection of myself, and the spirit of the sea is the shark. I view these great beautiful creatures differently to most. I do not fear them. They are just living by what they have always done, as the apex predator in the sea. We intrude on their territory. I remember the first time I saw a great white shark. I had just climbed into the dive boat after a dive on a sunken boat. It just cruised on past the boat, ignoring the divers down at the bottom of the sea, just seeing what was going on before heading off elsewhere, exploring the sea. These beautiful creatures are not evil killing monsters that media make them out to be. They play a vital role in marine ecosystems, and they should be respected.
